Florida Individual Health Insurance

In Florida, private health insurance is broadly classified into individual health insurance, employer group insurance and one person group or self employed health insurance.  If you are US citizen or permanent resident under age 65, relocating to Florida, and not covered under an employer sponsored groups health insurance plan, then individual health insurance is where we need to look.  Individual health insurance is medically underwritten in Florida.  You can find more on that at Individual Health Insurance.  If there are no serious health issues, then I would suggest you run some quotes by clicking here

If you are a non US citizen or non permanent resident, under age 65,  relocating to Florida, then there are things we will need to consider.  Health insurance in Florida is very different from health insurance in most countries.  Individual health insurance for people under age 65 is not guaranteed.   In the US, we have Medicare which is the government health insurance program connected to US social security.  Medicare is available to US citizens that have contributed to social security.   Currently, non US citizens can buy into Medicare after they have been in the US for more than five years.

If you and your family are relocating to the US from a another country and are under age 65, then we can look at individual health insurance.  My first suggestion it to consider getting a permanent international major medical health insurance plan before you come the US.  It needs to be a plan that includes coverage in the US. You need to apply for these in your home country.  You can find these plans at

Domestic health insurers have residency requirement that must be met before they will consider new residents to Florida for individual health insurance.  The domestic health insurance plans are much more expensive than most international health insurance plans as healthcare in the US is the most expensive in the world.   I suggest you have a look at the permanent international health insurance plans mentioned above.

If you are Canadian, under age 65,  and will medically qualify for individual health insurance, I do have a carrier that has special eligibility consideration for Canadians.  Please contact me so we can discuss this option.  It is only available to Canadians relocating to Florida.

Non US Citizens Over Age 65

In the US, US citizens, in general, receive Medicare benefits at age 65.   Medicare is available to people that have met the social security contribution requirements.  A non US citizen can apply for Medicare after he or she has been in the US for more than 5 years.  He or she would then pay for Medicare.  Because Medicare starts at age 65, domestic individual health insurance plans end at age 65.   Your situation is different from people relocating to the US under age 65.  Please have a look at the Inbound Immigrant plan found at

Businesses Opening in or Relocating to Florida

Florida divides businesses into 3 main categories.  These are self employed persons or one person groups, small groups having 2 to 50 full-time (25 hours per week or more) employees and large groups with more than 50 employees.  Each of these has it's own particular requirements.   If you are opening or relocating your business to Florida, we need to discuss this to determine what is the best approach.  You can find more information at
